I won't tell you her name. I won't tell you exactly what she said. But I will tell you what happens in that first hour, because it happens almost every time.
A young adult walks in. Sits down across from me. Hands still, or not still at all. Eyes on the table, or the window, or somewhere I can't quite follow.
And I ask a question most people don't expect.
Not "what's hard for you." Not "what are we working on." I ask what they're good at.
The pause that follows tells me almost everything I need to know.
Some answer right away, like they've been waiting years for someone to ask. Some genuinely don't know, because nobody has asked them that question in a way that mattered. Some assume it's a trick, and wait to see what I do with the answer before they trust it.
I've learned to sit inside that pause instead of rushing to fill it.
Month 1 of Build & Launch is called Discover, and if you only read the program outline, it might sound like the quiet month. The one before the "real" work starts. It isn't. It's the month everything else depends on.
Sixteen weeks, one session at a time, and the first four are spent almost entirely on one question: who are you, actually, underneath everything you've been told you need to fix.
That's not a soft question. It's the hardest one most young adults in this program have ever been asked directly, in a room where the answer gets written down and kept.
Because it does get kept. From session one, every participant starts a journal that's entirely theirs. An interest map. A strengths profile. The beginning of a story they're telling in their own words, maybe for the first time, instead of the version other people have told about them.
I know why that first hour matters so much, because I remember my own version of it. Years of people asking me what I needed help managing, and almost nobody asking what I already did well. By the time someone finally did, I'd nearly stopped expecting the question.
I built Month 1 the way I did because I don't want anyone I work with to wait that long.
So if you're picturing what the first month of Build & Launch looks like, picture less structure-building and more listening. Picture a sixty-minute session where the biggest goal is simply getting the real answer, not the rehearsed one. Picture a journal with one page in it, and fifteen more weeks to fill it.
If that's the kind of first hour your young adult hasn't had yet, that's exactly what Build & Launch is built to give them. Fill out the inquiry form, or come to a weekly Instagram Live session, and I'll walk you through what the rest of the four months looks like.
